With 10 acres of church property, part of our long-term vision is to make under-used areas exemplify a more naturally welcoming environment for people and all creatures. 2022 began with optimistic plans to install a “rain garden” on church property to capture contaminated parking lot runoff before it enters the Rice Creek drainage system. We began work in July 2022 on a perennial pollinator bed next to entrance drive. This has been an opportunity for volunteer gardeners/landscapers.
In 2024, the team is looking forward to a big focus on reducing waste at CtK. Through a grant opportunity from Ramsey and Washington Counties, we have the opportunity to purchase resources and receive training support on things like composting, replacing disposable products with reusable or compostable materials, and making waste reduction investments with CPY.
We have moved towards cutting the lawn on a portion of our property with an electric riding mower. Members have been quite receptive to the challenge of pitching in. Also, we are in the process of growing and educating the congregation about native prairie plants with Heidi Ferris of Growing Green Hearts guiding us in that project.
