On a bright Sunday morning last September many of us celebrated with an outdoor worship service followed by a joyous planting event. We filled our brand-new rain garden/bioswale along 7th street with 1600 native plants selected to keep parking lot runoff from polluting Long Lake and Rice Creek. Enthusiastic trowel wielders, ranging from preschoolers to octogenarians enjoyed the camaraderie, the hot dogs and a well-deserved sense of accomplishment. It was a memorable day and great example what can be done when we all buy into a common goal. Christ the King has even been written up in Synod and Rice Creek Watershed District publications as an example for other congregations. (See links below.) Notable as that Sunday was, it was preceded by many months of planning and work. And now, to keep the ball rolling, we need to dedicate ourselves to nurturing this fledgling garden. The Care for Creation Team will be gathering between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month during the growing season to weed and attend to other needs that may arise. First date is planned for May 21st. We invite anyone; individuals, families or other groups to join us for an hour of earth-friendly activity. And maybe a treat to replace the burned calories.
