There’s been a fair amount of rain this week - have you glimpsed any rainbows? As Christians, we know the beginning of the rainbow is rooted in the story of the Great Flood with the central characters being Noah and his family, animals marching two-by-two, a flood of destruction, and a bird that brings the hope of a dry branch (Genesis 6-9). Also essential is the rainbow, a sign of promise and a reminder to both God and humanity that a Great Flood will not cover the earth ever again.

I think a rainbow is at its prettiest when all colors are visible. Certainly each color is distinct and could stand on its own, but when combined with all the ROY G BIV colors, the majesty is even greater. At CtK, our value to Embrace All God’s Children and as a Reconciling in Christ (RIC) congregation, we lean into extending Christ’s welcome and love to all people.

The use of the word ‘Purple’ to describe a congregation is a metaphor for a blend of opinions. Like the uniqueness of our God-created DNA, we represent diverse opinions. Political opinions. Social opinions. Economic opinions. Theological opinions. Unlike the secular part of society, Christian faith grounds our shared life together by:

  • Acknowledging and celebrating differences

  • Supporting difficult conversations

  • Fostering deep and meaningful relationships

The world around us does a really good job of pointing out polarization and suggesting there is little to be done to bridge a divide, yet the saving grace of Jesus tells a different story. Join this week (9/21) and next week’s (9/28) Sunday Adult Learning Time (SALT) as we openly explore how being a congregation with a blend of various points of view and perspectives are joined together as one in the body of Christ.
