Psalm 126 is subtitled, “A Harvest of Joy” but there are surely times when we don’t feel joyful. One such time for me was December, 2017: “It’s nearly Christmas and my heart is weighted down: my sister, Juli, is dying from cancer. Her death is not imminent...it is not impending but it is closer every day and I don't have any “shouts of joy” (verse 2
)“Perhaps I need to return to the beginning of Psalm 126, "WHEN the LORD restored our fortunes" and really hear the promise-not "if" but "WHEN"...The Lord restored our fortunes (verse 1). There will come a time when joy is restored.
“I may not see a way out...I cannot stop the cancer that is killing Juli...but I can say "WHEN" I see her again in heaven, she will be restored and healthy and whole. And oh my, we will have great shouts of joy and cries of "The LORD has done great things for us and we rejoiced" (verse 3).”
Let us pray. Giving God, Even when it might not seem possible, help us to see and experience the promise of “WHEN” in our lives-when you restore our joy, when you fill us with laughter, when you do great things for us. In Jesus’ name and for his sake, Amen.
