“Our citizenship is in heaven.” Literally, the translation from Greek is: “live as citizens worthy of the gospel.” And not as individuals, but as a community standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel. This is what Paul is calling the Philippians and us to do and be.
Whether we are Americans, Canadians, Mexicans, Venezuelans, ultimately we are Christians, called to live as citizens worthy of the gospel. That is the lens through which our decisions, our behavior will and should be judged. Can you imagine ways to follow the example of Jesus through humble and self-sacrificial living for the sake of others? Ways to “live as citizens worthy of the gospel?”
Imagine following Christ’s example during these five weeks and how that might extend throughout the year, throughout a lifetime. How will your Lenten journey guide you in becoming a citizen of the gospel?
Let us pray:Loving Lord, help us to stand firm in your ways. Amen.
