Whenever I travel to Florida for vacation, one of the things that I enjoy doing is walking up and down Siesta Key beach, looking at all the sandcastles that people have built. Some of these sandcastles are absolutely jaw dropping! From mermaids, to fortresses, to snow (sand?) men, it is so cool to see all the work that people have put into their sculptures.
While looking at these structures, it’s hard to imagine that they are made up of tiny, ordinary little bits of sand. On its own, sand is nothing much to behold. But when a creator takes something simple like sand and molds it, it is transformed into a completely new creation. How wonderful it is that God has taken something ordinary like us and transformed us into a new, extraordinary creation in Christ. Every single day, without fail, God washes us clean through the waters of baptism and calls us forth as new beings, commissioned to spread the good news of God’s love for all people through Jesus Christ. The old is gone; the new has come!
Let us pray.God of reconciliation, help us to love others as we are loved, forgive others as we are forgiven, and remember that we are a new creation in Christ, called to love and serve all of your children. Amen.
