It was much later, that I figured out that the entire song was straight out of Psalm 51—the psalm appointed for Ash Wednesday. For some reason, reading that psalm in a darkened church with an ashen cross on my forehead didn’t quite connect with the more joyous feeling of presenting our gifts—nor the anticipation of a Sunday donut!
This psalm helps me remember that as much as Lent is a time for repentance, it is also a time of restored joy, renewed spirit, and freedom in Christ. That there is room for both deep reflection and great joy in our Lenten observances.
Let us pray. Give me a clean slate, a fresh start, and a re-balanced life. Restore to me the joy that comes from knowing that I belong to you and matter to you. Amen.
