Walking a mile makes a big difference

Each week, the Community Support Center (CSC) helps people just like Kate, a single mom of a teenage son, who came to the CSC in December of last year.

She was visibly distressed as she told us she lost her job and couldn’t pay her December rent. Her landlord was threatening eviction, and she did not know what to do. She had already used the usual resources for aid in dealing with a previous crisis, and she was running out of time to avoid losing her home. Kate told us she was going to work at her friend’s salon doing nails until she was able to get a full-time job, so she would probably be able to pay the next month’s rent. The CSC paid a portion of the rent that day and we appealed to the landlord to give her more time to find the rest of the money.

At the next appointment Kate excitedly told us she got a temp-to-hire job. Since she he did not have a car, she would be taking the bus.  Because bus routes are not direct, it would take her hours to get to and from work.  So she would not be able to continue with appointments at the CSC. However, she promised to update us and come in whenever she could.

Months later she called the CSC, wanting to use her day off to come in to tell us her great news. She got permanently hired at her job and it would be full-time with benefits! She also was able to buy a reliable car at an auction. Now she can drive to work and be around at night for her teenage son. She also wanted us to know that she has paid her rent on time ever since we helped her. Kate admitted that she is still struggling and lives paycheck-to-paycheck, especially since her landlord raised the rent $100 when she renewed her lease. She told us that it is a comfort to know that the CSC is there for her and is on her side.
